John & Jane

Ashim Ahluwalia, 83 min, India, USA.

A entirely original blend of observational documentary and tropical science-fiction, John & Jane follows the stories of six "call agents" that answer American 1-800 numbers in a Mumbai call center.

After a long education into American culture and working 14 hour shifts, work at the call center quickly becomes strenuous. Moving between the fluorescent lights at the office late at night and the tough Indian reality, John & Jane examines a new generation of urban Indians who have started to live their lives between the real and the virtual. But this futuristic world of American wannabes isn't simulated, isn't science fiction, these are the times they live in. John & Jane asks worrying questions about personal identity and what it means to be "Indian" in the 21st century's globalized world.
