Must-see doc about Japanese idol culture touring Doc Lounge!
After premiering at Sundance and travelleing several major festivals around the world, Tokyo Idols by acclaimed Japanese director Kyoko Miyake is finally about to hit the Nordic countries, with Doc Lounge clubs leading the way!
"Idols” has fast become a phenomenon in Japan, girl bands and pop music pierce into the Japanese lifestyle. The story of this ever growing movement is told through Rio, a classic "Tokyo Idol" who takes us on her journey toward fame, together with her super fans - a group of adult middle aged men, who devote their lives to following her, in the virtual world and in real life.
With her provocative look into the Japanese pop music industry and its focus on traditional beauty ideals, filmmaker Kyoko Miyake confronts the nature of gender power dynamics at work. As the female idols become younger and younger, Miyake offers a critique on the veil of internet fame and the new terms of engagement that are now playing out IRL around the globe.
Shown for the first time in Sweden during Doc Lounge Stockholm festival at Trädgården this summer, the film is about to be shown at five additional Doc Lounge clubs during september. As always at Doc Lounge, we've bunkered up with exiting surprises, collaborations and special guests. Check out the details of the Tokyo Idol event in your city!
